Blackfriars Fall Play
THE VISIONS OF SIMONE MACHARD depicts the story of Simone, a teen-aged girl in France during the 1940 German invasion. Absorbed by the story of Joan of Arc, she dreams that her brother, a French soldier, has called upon her to save France. In dream interludes, Simone identifies as Joan, seeing the people around her as historical figures. Inspired by a sense of mission, she feeds hungry refugees and, when the Germans arrive, sets fire to the hotel's gasoline supplies to prevent them from falling into enemy's hands.
The play, by the German moderist Bertolt Brecht, was jointly written with Lion Feuchtwanger and was completed during their exile in Los Angeles.
