Fostering Creativity and Collaboration in the Classroom: A Week in Review

Another week has zoomed by, and it's been an exciting one in our school. Our house system continues to thrive, with students showing remarkable passion and engagement. Today, we're going to take a closer look at some of the highlights from this week's observations that showcase the incredible creativity, collaboration, and community spirit within our classrooms.

Sculpture: Crafting Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) Spirit Animals:

In our Sculpture class, something truly magical is happening as students are hard at work constructing Day of the Dead spirit animals. These large-scale creations are taking shape using a diverse array of materials. What makes this observation truly special is the collaborative aspect of the project. Each class had to select one animal to work on collectively. This decision led to every student getting actively involved in the construction process.

The classroom buzzed with energy as students brainstormed ideas and executed their vision for their chosen spirit animal. The sense of camaraderie and teamwork was palpable, demonstrating that our classroom environment nurtures engagement, collaboration, and a strong sense of community. As we eagerly anticipate Dia De Los Muertos in October, it's clear that we can expect to witness some extraordinary final products from these young artists.

English I: Creativity in Character Interpretation:

In English I, our students embarked on a unique creative journey inspired by the novel "The Glass Castle." Their task was to create Instagram posts based on characters from the book, with each post featuring an image representing a pivotal event in the story and a caption that provided insight into the character's perspective.

What made this assessment truly remarkable was the inclusion of peer feedback. After crafting their Instagram posts, students took the time to offer feedback to their classmates on sticky notes. This feedback included both praise for elements they liked and constructive suggestions for improvement. This approach not only gave students a voice in assessing their peers' work but also encouraged them to self-assess and reflect on their own efforts.

This multifaceted assessment not only fostered creativity but also provided students with a variety of avenues for expressing their thoughts, ideas, and skills. It promoted a culture of continuous improvement and self-reflection, essential skills for lifelong learners.
