Senior Caroline White Shares Her Dyslexia Journey with Faculty

At February’s faculty meeting, senior Caroline White stepped into the role of teacher as she shared her educational journey with dyslexia. Caroline presented during the faculty meeting’s Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Show and Tell, a monthly segment connected to Bishop Lynch’s instructional framework that encourages multiple ways for students to engage with and demonstrate their learning.

She explained what dyslexia is, discussed the strengths and challenges that accompany the diagnosis, and spoke candidly about the extra effort required to navigate reading and writing tasks.

Caroline also led faculty volunteers through a mirroring activity designed to simulate how a dyslexic brain processes written work. What seemed simple at first quickly became a surprising challenge, offering teachers a firsthand glimpse into the experience many dyslexic students face.

Her presentation reflects months of research and personal reflection and will earn Caroline the Girl Scout Gold Award later this spring.

Through Bishop Lynch’s Universal Design for Learning framework, faculty provide multiple means for students to engage with material and demonstrate their learning. By sharing her perspective, Caroline helped deepen faculty understanding of how thoughtful instructional design ensures that every student is supported, challenged, and positioned for growth.
