Bishop Lynch High School has appointed a new director of bands, Javier Luna. Luna brings a wealth of experience to the BL Fine Arts program, both as a musician and an educator. Luna's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of North Texas and a master's degree in jazz pedagogy from the University of Miami.
Luna previously served as the associate director of bands, director of percussion studies, and director of Jazz band at Garland High School, and as a private lesson instructor and marching cymbal instructor for Dallas-area and San Antonio high schools. Most recently, Luna was the site coordinator for a non-profit student ensemble in Miami, Florida for at-risk youth, and he is certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid.
"I believe what makes Bishop Lynch special over any other school is that we can build our band program together using Jesus as our foundation," shared Luna when asked about his hopes for the Fine Arts Department. He looks forward to bringing his musical prowess and pedagogical expertise to the Bishop Lynch community. "We will strive to be a competitive ensemble and reach the highest level of musicianship as a team," said Luna.
“The Fine Arts Department is very excited to welcome Javier Luna to our BL Family and lead our band program," said Director of Fine Arts Catherine Brockette. "Javier’s positive energy, expertise, and passion for the art of music will be an asset to our students and program as a whole. He brings strong mentorship in creating the next generation of leaders, and his collaborative mindset will benefit not only the band program, but also our school community.”
Luna's first day on campus will be July 22, 2024.
