Friar Rises to Elite Cubing Ranks

Bishop Lynch senior Alejandro Kolster Passos is making his mark in the competitive world of cubing. With an interest in Rubik’s Cubes that began at the age of five, Alejandro started competing in 2018 upon the invitation of his school’s cubing club president. Over time, he discovered that Square-1, a puzzle known for its unique shape-shifting design, was his preferred event. Although Square-1 poses challenges to many beginners, Alejandro appreciates the advanced methods that allow him to continually improve.

Alejandro competed in the World Cube Association’s Texas Championship 2025 in Waco earlier this month, where he placed an impressive fourth in the Square-1 competition with a 10.29-second average—the third-highest average in Texas. He also earned a standout 6.52-second single in the first round, ranking third in Argentina, his birth country and the nation he represents, as well as ninth in South America.

With nearly 24,000 Square-1 competitors among more than 265,000 registered with the World Cube Association, Alejandro’s achievements place him at an elite level. Once the worldwide official results are announced, he has the potential to place in the top 250 worldwide for Square-1.

He looks forward to more opportunities ahead, including upcoming DFW and Texas competitions later this year. Congratulations, Alejandro!
