2026 Educator of the Year

2026 Educator of the Year

Bishop Lynch is proud to name Mr. John Athas ‘81 the 2026 Educator of the Year! For three decades, Mr. Athas has shaped the Bishop Lynch community through his passion for theater, storytelling, and the transformative power of education.

A Forever Friar himself, Mr. Athas’ Bishop Lynch journey began as a student in the late 1970s, when he discovered his love for theater in his first high school production, “Curtain Going Up” directed by Br. Roger. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from SMU and working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, he found his true calling in education, blending acting, movement, literature, and storytelling to teach English and theater.

Since returning to Bishop Lynch in 1995, Mr. Athas has directed more than 50 productions, helped shape the design of our McGonigle and Blackbox Theatres, launched innovative programs like the Catholic Rock Music Project, and inspired generations of students, many of whom now work as educators and professionals in theater, film, and television. A dedicated teacher, mentor, and proud Friar parent to Luke Athas ‘15Sophie Athas Pecha ‘13, and Veronica, Class of 2027, Mr. Athas’ impact on our Bishop Lynch community is both lasting and profound.

As BL’s 2026 Educator of the Year, Mr. Athas is nominated for the Diocese of Dallas Distinguished Educator of the Year award. Winners will be announced at a reception on April 24.

Congratulations, Mr. Athas, and thank you for your devoted service to our Friar Family! To view more photos, along with videos of Mr. Athas' students sharing his impact, visit Instagram or Facebook.
