Bishop Lynch High School is bringing the Hope Squad to campus. Created in 1999, Hope Squad is a school-based, peer-to-peer suicide prevention program. This program is currently running in over 35 states and in Canada, and in over 1,200 schools. It is classmates helping classmates in need. Squad members are trained by an advisor to watch for at-risk students, provide comfort, identify suicide warning signs, refer concerns, and seek help from adults. The program reduces youth suicide through education, training and peer intervention.
In May, BL students were asked to nominate themselves or fellow classmates to be a part of the suicide prevention program. Catherine Brockette, a counselor in the BL guidance department, is the lead advisor for BL’s Hope Squad, and she said the student nomination response was overwhelming.
“Bishop Lynch has such a caring community of students, and I wish we could have accepted every nominee. I am excited to kick off our Hope Squad training and this wonderful peer-to-peer program in the fall,” said Mrs. Brockette.
