• Academic Coaching

  The Academic Coach is an additional resource for students needing short-term one-on-one academic coaching in the area of organization, time management, and study strategies. Students are usually referred by a counselor and/or teachers.

• Counselors and College Advising

  Students and their families have a team of counselors who work collaboratively to provide academic guidance and personal support.  In addition, BL's College Advisor assists students in selecting and charting their academic course by helping them find colleges and universities that match their academic goals, needs, and abilities. 

• Essential Level Classes

  Essentials classes are taught at a slower pace, less content in both breadth and depth, more repetition, and drill in basics. Enrollment in Essentials level courses is restricted to students who have documented learning differences or deficiencies identified through standardized test results. 
  
  Freshman levels of Algebra are double-blocked and meet every day. Other Essentials classes are single blocked and meet every other day. BL offers Essentials classes in:  English I- IV, Algebra I-II, Chemistry, and Spanish I-II. See the Course Selection Handbook for more information.

   

• Freshman Seminar Class

  A one-semester course designed to help freshmen make a smooth transition into the rigor of high school academic life.  Instructors work in conjunction with freshman teachers, counselors and even coaches to foster individual success. Students are mentored 1-on-1 to receive individual assistance. Some of the topics include organizational skills, time management methods, classroom technology, problem-solving, goal setting, how to study, and much more.  For more information contact Denise DiBiase.

• Math Success Center

  Need extra help in a math class?  The Math Success Center (MSC), located in room 346, is home to veteran math teacher, Mr. Mike Hall.

   

  Hours of Availability:  7:45–8:10 am, 8:30–4:00 pm (Mr. Hall takes B lunch). Students may go to the MSC during any study hall, Wednesday Activity Period, early dismissal, or late arrival. Drop-in or email Mr. Hall for an appointment.

   

  Topics Covered:  Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, ICM, Statistics, AP Statistics, Calculus AB and BC, Advanced Quantitative Reasoning, and Intermediate Algebra.

• The Learning Center

  The Learning Center is a resource for students with documented learning differences as well as for students experiencing academic difficulties. 
  
  

  The Learning Center offers:

   

  • Meet with parents and students to determine accommodations
  • Processing of applications for extended time for PSAT/SAT and ACT
  • Parent support in determining if students need outside testing for learning disabilities or ADHD
  • Working with teachers and Guidance Counselors to address academic difficulties experienced by BL students
  • Extended time testing for students with Accommodation Plans in the LC for midterm/final and classroom tests

• The Writing Center

  Need help with writing a paper? The Writing Center, located in the library, is available to help with any course's writing needs. 

   

  Hours of availability: Peer tutors and an English teacher are on duty during every class period except mentor time. You can schedule an appointment via FriarNet Resources Page or limited walk-in appointments are available. Please be mindful of special schedules when making your appointment. At this time, help is not available before or after school.
