The 10 Commandments of being a successful

high school Baseball player

  1. Look the part - wear baseball pants, tuck in your shirt, don't wear your hat backwards, and wear a shirt from the team that you play on.

  2. Hustle - in everything that you do on the baseball field.

  3. Always pay attention and ask questions.

  4. Respond to the coaches with respect.  Use "yes sir" and "no sir."

  5. Do not respond to instruction with "I know."  If you knew, why didn't you do it right the first time?

  6. Do not be afraid to get dirty.  Laying out for balls and sliding impresses coaches.

  7. Be 15 minutes early to every practice.

  8. Never miss a practice - If an emergency occurs and you are unable to make a practice, make sure and tell your coach ahead of time and not after the fact.

  9. Take care of your equipment - Hang you bag or put it neatly away and do not leave your equipment on the field.

  10. Be the first to volunteer to help get equipment out or put it away.

What does it take to be a

Champion?

bullet

Be a student of baseball - learn the game.

bullet

Be passionate about baseball - love the game.

bullet

Agree to let your coaches train you.

bullet

Set personal and team goals and work hard to achieve them.

bullet

Hard work and hustle are more important than talent.

bullet

Work hard during practice.  The guy who beat you our for the starting job did and so did the team you are playing.

bullet

Practice hard because you play the way you practice.

bullet

Do something to help your team win, whether you play or not.

bullet

Be passionate about your teammates; help them get better.

bullet

Never argue with an umpire.

bullet

Do not make excuses nor let anyone make excuses for you.  Take responsibility.

bullet

Don't tell people how good you are; prove it to them.

bullet

Games are usually lost, not won.  Mistakes lead to losses.

bullet

Defense and pitching win more games than hitting.

bullet

Pitching sets the tone for the game.

bullet

Being able to bunt is the difference between winning and losing a few game each year.

bullet

Show off your talent to your current coach and your future coach by doing the following:

bullet

When you jog to warm up, finish first.

bullet

When you stretch, do it best.

bullet

When you play catch, throw to a target and hit it every time.

bullet

When you play catch, catch the ball or block the bad throw and keep it in front of you every time.  If a ball does get past you, run and get it.

bullet

When you are doing a drill, do it perfect every time.

bullet

Go hard all the time.  Never walk on a baseball field.

bullet

As a batter/runner, run to first as though it matters that you are safe.

bullet

Always know the situation on defense and do the right thing.
