Curriculum

As a college preparatory high school, Bishop Lynch provides a rigorous academic program for a wide range of learners. BL offers more than 120 classes, including Advanced Placement/Dual Enrollment, honors, regular, and essentials level courses. Students aren’t restricted to just one learning track. For instance, a student may be enrolled in AP English III and an essentials-level chemistry course.

These are the core values of a Bishop Lynch High School faculty member. With solid classroom teaching experience and expertise in their chosen fields, BL faculty members go the extra mile to help our Friars thrive academically. 

Nearly 65 percent of BL faculty and staff have advanced degrees, and many are published authors.  

In addition, approximately 18 percent of Bishop Lynch faculty and staff are BL alumni back to educate the next generation of Friars! 

BL TEACHER PILOTS PROJECT BASED LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM 

Faculty Highlight

As Bishop Lynch High School continues to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into the curriculum and instruction on campus, BL teacher Amy Wheeler is piloting new Project Based Learning (PBL) in her Advanced Placement (AP) World History class. Mrs. Wheeler is Bishop Lynch’s social studies department chair and a member of the College Board where she helps write and grade the national AP test each year. 

Bishop Lynch, thanks to Mrs. Wheeler’s leadership, is one of only eight schools in the United States piloting Project Based Learning for World History. Mrs. Wheeler was invited to serve as an inaugural member of the AP PBL Development Committee, and she was selected from hundreds of AP teachers based on her interest and experience.  

Mrs. Wheeler’s instructional implementation will look different when PBL kicks off. Her students will participate in robust projects that drive the student-centered curriculum through sustained investigation of complex, real-world problems. 

Research shows this teaching approach can significantly improve student performance on AP exams.  

For her part, Mrs. Wheeler is excited to pilot PBL at Bishop Lynch. 

“Teaching history is my passion, and I am thrilled to present this new learning approach to my students. At the national conference I attended this summer, there was a great deal of anticipation for applying PBL to World History. The time has now arrived, and I can’t wait to see PBL in practice here at Bishop Lynch,” said Mrs. Wheeler.

elizabeth gonzalez

Elizabeth Gonzalez teaches AP Human Geography at Bishop Lynch, and she embraces every opportunity for international travel to broaden her worldview and that of her students. Mrs. Gonzalez was selected for the prestigious Teacher Leadership Program sponsored by the Qatar Foundation International and the University of Texas at Austin. A cohort of only 20 K-12 educators was chosen through a highly competitive nationwide selection process for this two-year intensive professional development program that includes an immersion trip to Qatar.  

Thanks to Mrs. Gonzalez’s travels and pursuit of top-tier continuing education, freshman students in her AP Human Geography class have a front-row seat to fascinating real-world lectures on history, geography and current events.  

 

Rachel Jay 

Rachel Jay teaches English II and Honors English II at Bishop Lynch, but you’ll find her incorporating theatre and theology in her lessons as well. Mrs. Jay acted throughout her high school and college years, so her enthusiastic classroom presentation skills include nods to her performative past. Mrs. Jay also brings Catholic Intellectual Tradition into her classroom through her approach to the texts students read and their thought-provoking literary discussions.  

With a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Dallas and a master’s degree through the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Portland, Mrs. Jay instills a love of learning – and of reading – in the sophomore class.  

 

Dr. Rey Andrade 

Dr. Rey Andrade teaches pre-calculus and advanced quantitative reasoning at Bishop Lynch High School. Dr. Andrade has been an adjunct mathematics professor at Dallas College for more than 20 years, and he brings his post-secondary teaching experience and his impressive educational background (Master of Arts in Mathematics and a Doctor of Education in Educational Management from Cebu Normal University in the Philippines) to the BL campus.  

Dr. Andrade believes his students learn best by doing, so he incorporates collaboration, peer teaching and online learning platforms in the classroom, which all add up to student success!

Accreditation

BLHS is accredited by the Texas Catholic Conference Bishops Education Department (TCCBED) and Cognia. 

Bishop Lynch requires students to exceed the number of credits required to earn the Recommended High School Plan (RHSP) as defined by TCCBED. Bishop Lynch is a Catholic high school with a college preparatory curriculum that embraces the Catholic intellectual tradition. The school is committed to providing its enrolled students with the opportunity to learn and grow in preparation for education in college and university. The entire school program is focused on the achievement of the graduation outcomes in alignment with the school’s mission to “strive for excellence, seek truth, and work for justice in the world.”
